Thursday, while discussing Gov. Palin's convention speech with reporters, Republican Representative Lynn Westmoreland said this of the Obamas:
"Just from what little I've seen of her (Michelle Obama) and Mr. Obama, Sen. Obama, they're a member of an elite-class individual that thinks that they're uppity." (Emphasis added)
When asked to confirm whether or not he meant uppity, Rep. Westmoreland responded, "Uppity, yeah."

The term "elite" is the politically correct and politically safe way of calling a black person "uppity" in modern times, especially in this political climate where an African-American candidate has a strong chance of becoming our next President. Quite simply, ELITE is 21st Century Code for UPPITY (i.e. that colored boy don't know his place).
For a brief history or lesson on the term "uppity," see my previous post about it here.
For additional discussion on how Conservatives are using the term (via code word elite) against Senator Obama during this election cycle, see my post about it here.
