WASHINGTON, D.C. - From the moment Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich was arrested on corruption charges Tuesday, the nation was abuzz over who could possibly be the infamous Senate Candidate #5.
In the federal indictment against Gov. Blagojevich, one of the listed wiretaps recorded the governor saying how he was approached by an associate of Senate Candidate #5. The associate proposed a "pay to play" deal in which Senate Candidate #5 would pay $1M for appointment to President-Elect Barack Obama's Senate seat.
On Wednesday morning, Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. was revealed as Senate Candidate #5. In an attempt to calm the growing political fire threatening both his political career and perhaps physical freedom, Rep. Jackson held a press conference.
During the conference, Rep. Jackson claimed that he spoke with the U.S. Attorney's Office on Tuesday and was advised that he was "not a target of the investigation" or "accused of any misconduct." He went on to say that he met with Gov. Blagojevich for the first time in four years on Monday where he presented only his "record..qualifications..and vision."
