I first came across the documentary film Black Women Walking from a post on All Diva Media where the filmmaker Tracey Rose was interviewed. After watching the film, I knew I had to share it here as well.
As a black woman, I have been at the receiving end of street harassment more times than I can count. Looking back at my teenage years, I now understand that this was one of the reasons that led to my wearing oversized, baggy clothing - an attempt to hide my body, my womanness, so that I would "hopefully" go unnoticed and thus, not get harassed.
Sadly, street harassment is is a reality for black women. I don't know exactly when it happened, but this type of disrespectful catcalling has become acceptable in our community. In fact, disrespecting black women, in general, has become an acceptable pastime - morning, day and night, on the street, in music, in movies, in the club, amongst friends, etc. It must stop!
Ladies, I can relate to this documentary. Can you?
