Last Thursday, Oprah Winfrey attended the 11th Annual Uncommon Height Awards Gala in Washington, D.C. The gala is produced each year by the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) in honor of Dr. Dorothy I. Height's birthday, Chair and President Emeritus of NCNW. This year, Ms. Height celebrated her 97th birthday.
The NCNW honored Ms. Winfrey with the Uncommon Height Award. The award recognizes individuals who have the "ability to extend far above and beyond oneself to achieve greatness" and who "demonstrate a lifetime of service and achievement as exemplified in the spirit and tradition of Dr. Dorothy Irene Height."
Past recipients of the Uncommon Height Award include Sidney Poitier, Cathy Hughes, Ann M. Fudge, Johnetta B. Cole, Nancy Wilson, Quincy Jones, Maya Angelou, Bill and Camille Cosby, Vernon Jordan, Marian Wright Edelman, and Ms. Height herself.
